This summer I had the opportunity to live in Philadelphia, PA during my internship. I have always heard that Philly is the “city of brotherly love”, but wasn’t expecting to like the area at all. Oh, how I was wrong.

My Hair. My Soul. My Freedom.

Growing up, I hated my hair. I hated the kinks, the coils, and knots that formed inevitably. I hated the way it would defy gravity and turn into a ball of frizz on a warm summer day, especially after being straightened. Ultimately, this hatred for my hair was due to the hatred I had for my blackness and my culture. This is my hair story.
